Bethel has designed, managed and implemented freedom of expression projects in the Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan and West Africa. She began her career at the International Center for Journalists, where she supported the prestigious Knight International Journalism Fellowships. A few years later, she developed an interest in the cross-section of human rights, media and technology. This led her to take on a position at Free Press Unlimited in 2013, where she became the coordinator of StoryMaker, the first open-source technology media project at the organization. Bethel has been responsible for overseeing the development of an open-source app through an agile process, connecting partners on different levels from end users, journalists and media partners to ensure the success of the final product. During this time, she ran several workshops on journalism, digital safety and multimedia production for journalists and citizen reporters in Iraq, Tunisia, Egypt, and Morocco. In addition, Bethel is working to improve media education in Ethiopia by leading the development of a new journalism curricula at the only community-oriented university in the country. She has a strong interest in how technology can be used to improve freedom of expression and access to information and empowering journalists, citizens and vulnerable groups to become their own storytellers.
