This session will be led by Susan Abbott, independent consultant, together with Tara Susman-Peña, Paul Rothman of the Center for International Media Assistance, and Tunde Akanni from Lagos State University in Nigeria.

Program monitoring and evaluation for international media development has come a long way in the past decade. While there has been significant improvement in the media development sector’s skills and capacity to the “M” and the “E”, and at the same time there’s been improvement in terms of amassing data and comparative research related to key trends of the sector. Nonetheless, there remains a sense of unease or frustration about the ability to “prove impact” or to demonstrate to donors and key stakeholders the role that media development plays as part of larger efforts aimed at reducing poverty, supporting democracy and governance programs, and being a central component to other international development goals and strategies, i.e. the newly formed Sustainability Development Goals.

This session will be used to come up with a collaborative, cross-organizational research project that will make use of the M&E data and research from media development organizations. We will break into groups and work together on coming up with ideas for a year-long research project that will set for in motion a collaborative and networked approach to sharing data, leveraging our respective M&E and research in the media development environments where programs take place, and identify academic and practitioner partnerships to carry out the work.

We hope that this year-long project will be just one of many ways that we can come together as a community to tell evidence-based stories of why media development is pivotal to the development enterprise.

This session will build on Linking Research & Practice 1: Creating Networks and Communities of Practice Around Media Development Research. Participants are welcome to join any of the sessions regardless of previous participation.
