A changing media landscape in terms of constantly evolving digital technologies is altering the dissemination and reception of news and information. More and more content is being crafted for an audience which is young and constantly on the move, or the “digital natives”. This convergence in terms of news, digital media, and user-generated content has also opened up new avenues for civic engagement and political and social participation of the youth. The panel will discuss media consumption patterns of the younger generation, youth involvement in news creation, education curricula for aspiring journalists, and what media development institutions can do when supporting nascent media sectors in developing countries.
Rapporteur for the session: Laura Schwartz Henderson, Research Project Manager at the Center for Global Communication Studies, Annenberg School for Communication (University of Pennsylvania).
