The GFMD Simulation Game is designed as “serious fun”: to show how the access-to-information commitment in the UN’s new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) could actually affect local media, national development, and the public’s right to know. The game is timely: in a few months’ time the UN General Assembly will adopt official measurements to monitor countries’ progress on the SDGs, one of which is expected to be the “adoption and implementation” of a national access to information law. Through this game GFMD hopes to raise awareness about the SDGs and their relevance to media and access to information, help prepare media and civil society to aid national implementation of the SDGs, stimulate thinking about the interaction between media, NGOs, aid agencies and governments, examine country-level challenges and mechanisms for public access to information, and get further feedback on the game to refine it for future use in forums and workshops.
