This presentation analyses how hate propaganda is used as a means of political contention and suggests how open democracies should respond. It looks not only at conventional hate speech or incitement, but also campaigns of righteous indignation, through which political entrepreneurs marginalise opponents. The presentation draws on multi-country research conducted for the speaker’s new book, Hate Spin: The Manufacture of Religious Offense and its Threat to Democracy.
