The Right2Know campaign was born out of the need to challenge the Protection of Information Bill which was introduced in the South African parliament in 2010. The ‘Secrecy Bill’ as it was popularly known served to considerably extend the powers of the government, restrict freedom of information, and impose harsh penalties on activists, journalists, whistleblowers or anyone who attempted to release such information into the public domain. Celebrating nearly half a decade of the fight for freedom of expression and transparency the campaign highlights how vigilant civil society organisation can foster civic participation through effective community engagement.
