Safeguarding journalists in high risk zones: IREX SAFE Initiative

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

The IREX SAFE Initiative provides a triad of integrated security training to at-risk journalists and media practitioners through the lens of digital identity, physical awareness, and psychosocial care. Apart from augmenting capabilities the SAFE initiative also focuses on building support networks, opening up channels for dialogue with the government where possible, and reaching out to national and international civil society organisations and rights groups. Program goals involve providing a holistic safety tool-kit for journalists working in high-risk environments. It aims to operate a 24/7 program-wide hotline that provides access to emergency assistance. It also aims to establish resource centres which operate as a part of a network which promotes media-community solidarity and provides necessary safety information to journalists in need.

Rapporteur for the session: Jens Kiesheyer, Program Coordinator Fragile Africa, Free Press Unlimited.
