Galima Bukharbaeva

Galima Bukharbaeva, Uzbekistan, is currently the Editor-in-Chief of Centre1.com. She is known for her reporting on state authoritarianism and her eye-witness accounts of the May 13th 2005 massacre in Andijan, Uzbekistan. Due to her efforts in drawing attention to the country’s authoritarian policies she earned a reputation as one of Central Asia’s most outspoken journalists. Her work for the London-based Institute for War & Peace Reporting focused on sensitive issues such as police torture, repression of Islamic activists, and state-sponsored abuses against journalists and human rights activists. As a result, Bukharbaeva was placed under police surveillance, denied press accreditation, and threatened with prosecution. Facing government reprisals she fled first to Kyrgyzstan and then to New York where she pursued as Masters in Journalism in the Colombia University Graduate School of Journalism as a Fulbright Scholar.
