Khadija Ismayilova

Khadija Ismayilova is an Azerbaijani investigative journalist and a radio show host for the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. She holds a degree in philology from Baku State University. Khadija Ismayilova worked for the Russian-language newspaper Zerkalo, the English-language Caspian Business News, and Voice of America. For about two years Khadija Ismayilova was heading the RFE/RL Baku Bureau and stepped down in 2010 to focus on reporting, although she continued to host the popular RFE/RL radio program After Work. Khadija also worked and continues working with the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project authoring numerous award-winning investigations that uncovered high level corruption in Azerbaijan, including lucrative business deals of the Azerbaijani president’s family members, hidden interests of the president’s siblings in national contracts and mismanagement in the state financing sector. Khadija Ismayilova was arrested on December 5, 2014 and sentenced to 7.5 years of prison term on September 1, 2015. She was set free on May 25, 2016 following international advocacy campaign for her release. However, Khadija Ismayilova is not allowed to leave the country and is not fully acquitted of the crimes she was convicted of following the sham trial in the Azerbaijani courts. She is the recipient of the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2016 but was unable to attend the presentation ceremony in Helsinki, Finland on 3 May and the award was accepted by her mother on her behalf.
